In a country of long history and diverse races there are many things to inspire and satisfy the interest of culture seekers. Take a look at the following suggested tour itineraries; please note you can always ask for a program that exactly fits into your time and interest:

On this tour, you will be able to cover the whole of classic historic route with few rock-hewn churches of Tigray plus Harar. You will first drive to Debremarkos while on the road visiting Debrelibanos Monastery and Blue Nile Gorge. Then you will proceed to Bahirdar and have a city tour followed by boat trip that crosses to the other side of the lake while at the same time covering the near and far lying monasteries of Lake Tana Islands.

In Gonder you will visit the castle compound and Debrebirhan Selassie church (world Heritage site). Then you will have an excursion trip to the Semien mountains National park. Then you will drive to Axum admiring the spectacular mountain scenery and Tekezie Gorge .In Axum you will visit the single stone building-like stele and other archaeological sites of historic importance. Then you will add Yeha and /or Debredamo followed by about three rock-hewn churches of Tigray. Then you will proceed to Lalibela to visit the eleven rock hewn churches and other churches that lie in the out skirt. Drive through Ambalage and Alamata chain of Mountains you will appear in Kombolcha to drive the next morning to Awash. Passing one day in Awash National park you will continue to Harar . You will visit the Hyena man performance and the walled city of Harar. From Harar you can either drive back or fly back to Addis.

The advantage of this tour over TST 3006 is that you will be able to pass through the most scenic landforms.


Day 01)

Arrive in Addis Ababa, meet our staff and get transferred to the hotel

Day 02)

Drive to Debre Markos by visiting Debre Libanos Monastery (13th century), the Portuguese Bridge and the spectacular Blue Nile gorge. Meet the Amhara people.

Overnight: Shebel Hotel

Day 03)

Proceed along the rolling plateaus and farm lands of Gojam to Bahirdar. In the afternoon, you drive to the magnificent Blue Nile Falls. It is about 400 meter wide with full flood (in June, July and August to mid September).

Day 04)

You will have boat trip to cross Lake Tana to Gorgora Island. On the way, you visit two beautiful island monasteries and their valuable treasures which include biblical wall paintings, crowns of different Ethiopian Kings, ancient illuminated parchment books, superb crosses etc. Also, you visit Debre Sina Maryam Church right on the edge of the northern shore of Lake Tana. Then, meet the vehicle on the northern shore of Lake Tana and proceed to Gondar.

Day 05)

Tour of Gondar which includes the visit of the Royal Enclosure with its magnificent castles dated from the 17th and 18th century (world heritage site), the bath of king Fasiledes, and the remarkable church of Debrebirhan Selassie with its breathtaking 17th century wall and ceiling paintings.

Day 06)
Drive via the spectacular Tekeze River Gorge and one of the most scenic roads of Ethiopia called Lima limo to Axum.

Day 07)

Full day visit of Axum which includes the famous stele park with its huge monolithic obelisks, the ruined palace of the Queen of Sheba, ancient stone inscriptions, the ruined palace of king kaleb and his son, subterranean tombs of different Axumite kings, the church of St. Mary of Zion which is believed to house the Original Ark of the covenant etc.

Day 08)

Drive to Adigrat by visiting the monastery of Debredamo. (NB:  the visit of this place is allowed only for men and it is challenging to climb the 15mts sheer cliff face by the help of only rope which is lowered by the monastery monks) or the ancient Temple of Yeha (5th. C.B) ruins.

Overnight: Central Agame or similar hotel.

Day 09)

Drive to Mekelle; en-route, you visit some beautiful Tigray rock-church such as Abreha We Atsbeha and Wukro Kirkos.

Overnight: Axum Hotel

Day 10)

After breakfast leave for Lalibela passing through the stunning scenery of the North central Massif and the Tigrean plateau.

Overnight: Mountain view Hotel

Day 11)

In the morning, you visit the first group of King Lalibela’s 12th.C.rock-hewn churches. And in the afternoon, you will have mule ride to visit Asheten Mariam Monastery at 3000Mts. altitude.

Day 12)

In the morning, drive some 42 kms outside of Lalibela to visit King Yemrehane Kirstos church. Built up in a natural cavern, this magnificent church is even older than king Lalibela’s rock churches. Then you will visit the second group of King Lalibela’s 12th.C.rock-hewn churches.

Day 13)

Drive to Kombolcha via many small towns of Wollo province including the historical town of Wuchale, where the controversial Treaty of Wuchale is signed between Emperor Menelik of Ethiopia and Italy which ultimately led to the famous battle of Adwa in 1896. En-route, depending time availability, you visit Hayk Stephanos Monastery.

Day 14)

Drive via Bati and across the region of the Afar people to Awash. En-route is the Afar camel and goat herders.

Overnight: Awash falls Lodge

Day 15)

Game drives in Awash National Park to visit Awash River gorge and Awash River Falls. The thorny bushes of Awash National Park supports not only beautiful birds but also some mammals such as Beisa Oryx, Sommering’s Gazelle, Salt’s Dik Dik, Warthog, Black backed Jackal, Hamadriyas Baboon, and Greater and Lesser Kudus.

Day 16)

Drive to the Walled City of Harar; in the afternoon, tour of the old wall of Harar and its gates. This 5m-high wall was erected by Nur Ibn al-Wazir Mujahid. In the evening, you attend the hyena-man performance who feeds hyenas from his hand and a stick which is firmly held in his mouth.

Day 17)

In the morning, visit the Harari museum, a typical Harari house along with its beautiful basketry works and the former house of the famous French poet_ Arthur Rimbaud. Then, proceed to Dire Dawa town.

Overnight: Samra Hotel

Day 18)

Drive back to Addis Ababa. In the evening, you are invited dinner in one of the best cultural restaurants of the capital for traditional Ethiopia dish. Then, transfer to the airport for your departure flight back home.
