From the above lists of sites; Axum, Lalibela, Gonder and Simien National Park are registered by UNESCO as world heritage.

In addition of visiting sites you will enjoy the Christian festival Meskel (the founding of the true cross).All Christian in Ethiopia celebrate by  lighting a massive bonfire known in Ethiopian tradition as “Demera” to commemorate the foundation of true cross  which Jesus Christ was crucified by Queen Elena . In Ethiopia the monastery of Gishen Mariam holds the true cross of Christ. Don’t miss this program.


 
Itinerary

Day 1: Friday, September 16 2011

Arrive at Addis Ababa and transfer to hotel.

Day 2: Saturday, September 17 2011

Drive to Bahir Dar on the way you will visit Deber libanose Monastery which is about 107 kms from Addis Ababa. Then, proceed along the rolling plateaus and farm lands of Gojjam to Bahirdar.

Day 3: Sunday, September 18 2011

In the morning, set out for a boat trip on Lake Tana to see beautiful island monasteries and their valuable treasures which include biblical wall paintings, crowns of different Ethiopian Kings, ancient illuminated parchment books, superb crosses etc. In the afternoon drive to the magnificent Blue Nile Falls; it is about 400 meter wide with full flood (in June, July and August to mid September).

Day 4: Monday, September 19 2011

Drive to about 3-4 hours through Gorgora plane to Gondar. On the way with a little detour from the main road, you visit the village of the Awramba society (unique society in Ethiopia for their life style (philosophy) and custom) and their colorful woven products. Then, tour of Gondar which includes the visit the Royal Enclosure with its magnificent castles dated from the 17th and 18th century (world heritage site), the bath of king Fasiledes, the remarkable church of Debrebrihan Selassie with its breathtaking 17th century wall and ceiling paintings

Day 5: Tuesday, September 20 2011

Drive via Debark to the Simien Mountains National Park (World Heritage Site) to visit its superb scenery, stunning land form and the endemic fauna like the Gelada baboon(the bleeding heart baboon). In addition to this, you will be able to visit the unique flora which includes, the Giant Lobelia(Lobelia rynchopatelum),St. John’s Wort (Hypericum revolutum), Giant heath(Erica arborea), Red-hot pokers or torch lilies ( the Kniphofia), Everlasting flowers (Helichrysum), Sodom’s Apple ( Solannum indicum), the ivory colored Abyssinian Wild Rose(Rosa Abyssinica), Koso(Hagenia abyssinica), geranium, alchemilla etc.

Day 6: Wednesday, September 21 2011

Admiring the unique flora such as the Abyssinian wild rose and the Giant Lobelia, fauna and the stunning scenery leave the Semien Mountains via one of the most scenic roads of Ethiopia called Limalimo and the spectacular Tekeze Gorge to Axum. En route, on your right side of the road, you will have chance to gaze over parts of the Semien Mountains

Day 7: Thursday, September 22 2011

Full day visit of Axum (World Heritage Site) which includes the famous stele park with its huge monolithic obelisks, the ruined palace of the Queen of Sheba, ancient stone inscriptions, the ruined palace of king kaleb and his son, subterranean tombs of different Axumite kings, the church of St. Mary of Zion which is believed to house the Original Ark of the covenant etc.

Day 8: Friday, September 23 2011

Drive to Mekell En-route visits the ancient Temple of Yeha (5th. C.BC), and continue to towards Gherelata cluster of Rock churches to visit some selected Tigray Rock Churches based on their architectural and painting qualities. These churches include Dugum Silassie, Abreha Atsbeha, and Wukro Kirkos.

Day 9: Saturday, September 24 2011

After early breakfast leave for Lalibela passing through the stunning scenery of the North central Massif and the Tigrean plateau arriving Lalibela late afternoon.

Day 10: Sunday, September 25 2011

Visit the first and second group of King Lalibela's 12th.C.Rockhewn churches (World Heritage Site). Although all of these churches are carved out of huge blocks of rocks, each of them displays unique architectural features from the other.

Day 11: Monday, September 26 2011

Drive to Kombolcha via many small towns of Wollo province including the historical town of Wuchale, where the controversial Treaty of Wuchale is signed between Emperor Menelik of Ethiopia and Italy which ultimately led to the famous battle of Adwa in 1896. En-route, depending on time availability, you visit Hayk Stephanos Monastery.

Day 12: Tuesday, September, 27 2011

Drive back to Addis Ababa. In the afternoon celebrate Ethiopia Meskel. Maskel is celebrated by lighting a massive bonfire known in Ethiopian tradition as “Demera” at Meskel square. It is celebrated to commemorate the finding of the true cross as which Jesus Christ was crucified. In Ethiopia the monastery of Gishen Mariam holds the true cross of Christ. In the evening, after dinner, transfer to the airport and departure.
