Overview

Title:Tour of the Historic Route  with Trekking in the Semien Mountains National Park up to Mt. Ras Dashen

On the first day of your arrival, you meet our representative and get transferred to hotel. On the next day, you drive via Blue Nile gorge to the Lake shore city of Bahirdar. On Monday, you have boat trip on Lake Tana to visit the nearest monasteries of Ura Kidane Meheret and Azwa Mariam of Zeghe peninsula and on the same day you visit  the Blue Nile Falls (This Falls is particularly spectacular during the rainy season of June, July and August). On the following morning, proceed to the medieval city of Gondar to visit the magnificent Imperial Castles compound which was the center of politics in the first half of 17thC.Also you visit the bath of King Fasiledes and the most famous church of Debrebrihan Selassie to admire the Ethiopian church paintings style in its superb form. After that, you enter to Semien National Park to overnight at Chenek camp site. On the coming three consecutive days, you trek to Buwahit, Mesheba River, Chiroleba village, Ambiqwa, Mizma village and then climb Ras Dashen. Then, you meet the vehicles at Chenek and drive to Axum. In Aksum, you visit its historical and archeological site which includes the magnificent Obelisks of Aksum and Aksum Tsion church which is believed to House the original Ark of the Covenant. Next, you drive to   the town of Gherealta by visiting the 6thc Yeha temple then, proceeds to the city of Mekelle. En route you visit at least three Tigray Rock churches. On Monday, you drive to the historic town of Lalibela. Then you visit the marvelous rock hewn churches of King Lalibela, one of the world Heritage sites registered by UNSCO. On the following day, you drive to the town of Kombolcha by visiting the Genet Mariam church. On your last day, drive all the way back to Addis Ababa and have half day city tour. Before getting transfer to air port you are invited to a farewell dinner at one of the best traditional restaurant of the capital

Itinerary

Day1) Saturday, Oct.15/2011

Arrive in Addis Ababa. Meet our staff and transfer to the hotel.

Overnight: Jupiter International Hotel.

Day2) Sunday, Oct.16/2011

In the morning drive across the spectacular Blue Nile gorge. Then, proceed along the rolling plateaus and farm lands of Gojam to Bahirdar.

Day3)  Monday, Oct.17/2011

In the morning, boat trip on Lake Tana to see beautiful island monasteries and their valuable treasures which includes biblical wall paintings, crowns of different Ethiopian Kings, ancient illuminated parchment books, and superb crosses etc. In the afternoon, you will have excursion on a rough road to the magnificent Blue Nile Falls. It is about 400 meter wide with full flood (in June, July and August to mid September).

Day4) Tuesday, Oct.18/2011

In the morning, proceed to Gondar. On the way with a little detour from the main road, you visit the village of the Awramba society (unique society in Ethiopia for their life style (philosophy) and custom) and their colorful woven products. Then, tour of Gondar which includes the visit the Royal Enclosure with its magnificent castles dated from the 17th and 18th century (world heritage site), the bath of king Fasiledes, and the remarkable church of Debrebrihan Selassie with its breathtaking 17th century wall and ceiling paintings

Day 5) Wednesday, Oct.19/2011

Drive from Gondar via Debark to the Semien Mountains National Park up to Chenek, acclimatization, and preparation for trekking. This camp site is a good place to spot one of the two endemic animals which were the reason the park was established in the first place; Walia Ibex. Also on the way to this site you will have a chance to see the bleeding heart baboon or Galada baboon (another endemic animal of the park).

Day 6) Thursday, Oct.20/2011

Trek via Buwahit pass Mesheba River and Chiroleba Village to Ambiqwa. En-route from Chenek to Buwahit (4430m), you will once again have the chance to spot the endemic Walia Ibex in the craggy ledges of Semien Mountains.

Day 7) Friday, Oct.21/2011

Trek via Mizma Village to climb Ras Dashen (4543mts.) and return back to Ambiqwa.

Trek back to Chenek.

Day 9) Sunday, Oct.23/2011

Admiring the unique flora such as the Abyssinian wild rose and the Giant Lobelia, fauna and the stunning scenery leave the Semien Mountains via one of the most scenic roads of Ethiopia called Lima limo and the spectacular Tekeze Gorge to Axum. En route, on your right side of the road, you will have a chance to gaze over part of the Semien Mountains.

Day10) Monday, Oct.24/2011

Full day visit of Axum which includes the famous stele park with its huge monolithic obelisks, the ruined palace of the Queen of Sheba, ancient stone inscriptions, the ruined palace of king kaleb and his son, subterranean tombs of different Axumite kings, and the church of St. Mary of Zion which is believed to house the Original Ark of the covenant.

Day11) Tuesday, Oct.25/2011

Drive via Gherealta; visiting the ancient Temple of Yeha (5th. C.BC) to Mekele. En-route, you visit the churches of Dugum Sillassie, Abreha We Atsbeha and Wukro Kirkos.

Day12) Monday, Oct.26/2011

After breakfast leave for Lalibela passing through the stunning scenery of the North central Massif and the Tigrean plateau arriving Lalibela late afternoon.

Day13) Tuesday, Oct.27/2011

Visit the first and second group of King Lalibela's 12th.C.Rockhewn churches (World Heritage Site). Although all of these churches are carved out of huge blocks of rocks, each of them displays unique architectural features from the other.

Day14) Wednesday, Oct.28/2011

Drive to Kombolcha via many small towns of Wollo province including the historical town of Wuchale, where the controversial Treaty of Wuchale is signed between Emperor Menelik of Ethiopia and Italy which ultimately led to the famous battle of Adwa in 1896. En-route, depending on time availability, you visit Genet Mariam church.

Day15) Thursday, Oct.25/2011

Drive back to Addis Ababa and have half day tour of Addis Ababa which includes the Ethnological Museum in the former palace of King Hailesillassie, the National Museum, Holy Trinity Cathedral and Merkato_the largest open-air market in Africa. At first sight, this market appears full of chaos and impenetrable mass of stalls, items and people. However, a deeper inspection reveals that this market is pretty organized with different sections for different products. In the evening, you will be invited farewell dinner in one of the best traditional restaurants of the capital. Then, transfer to airport and depart.
