You first drive to visit Awash national park and continue to Asaita on the next morning. This day the guide arrange scouts at the same time you will make an excursion to Afambo the beginning Awash Delta. Then you will drive to Afdera (salt lake).continue to Dodom camp. In the afternoon you start to walk Ertale volcanic eruption. This day you will walk throughout the night because the cooler of the eruption is not visible at the day night. As the night you will walk to see the dramatic color formation as result of the eruption. Lastly you will visit the rock hewn churches of Lalibela 8th wonder of the world and registered by UNSECO as a world heritage site.

It is one of the most extraordinary experiences don’t miss the program.


 
Itinerary

Day 01 December 26/2011

Arrive in Addis Ababa and transfer to the hotel.

Overnight: Jupiter hotel (4*)

Day 02 December 27/2011

Leave Addis Ababa to drive in the Rift Valley crossing Metehara to Awash National Park. In the afternoon, game drive to spot Beisa Oryx, Kudu, Warthog, Gazelles, and the Magnificent Awash River Falls.

Day 03 December 28/2011

Drive across the territory of the Afar people to Asaita.

Day 04 December 29/2011

Produce the permission; organize the scouts’ e.t.c. Then, drive to Afrera Salt Lake, the real desert of the Afar region begins from here.

Day 05 December 30/2011

Drive to the typical Afar village of Dodom, from where we trek to the volcano. Preparation for trekking and in the evening trek to the rim of the volcano. During the night, you visit the drama of the active volcano of mount Ert Ale, in whose crater lays the only permanent lava lake in the world, and another volcano of bubbling lava.

Day 06 January 1/2012

In the morning, trek back and meet the vehicle to drive to Ahmedela, a far flung settlement in a nomadic tribal area.

Day 07 January 2/2012

At sun rise, in the morning hike (3 – 4 hours hot day) to the salt mines, where salt bars are cut and prepared for camel transportation, return to Ahmedela.

Day 08 January 3/2012

Morning drive to Dallol depression (one of the lowest points on the earth which dips to -116 meters). Visit amazing rock formations and bubbling sulfur springs. Then, continue to Berhaile.

Day 09 January 4/2012

Ascend to Desa escarpment with juniper and wild olive trees. Then, continue to Mekele town on the way visit wokro Cherkose church.

Day 10 January 5/2012

After breakfast leave for Lalibela passing through the stunning scenery of the North central Massif and the Tigrean plateau. En-route before reaching to Lalibela visits the magnificent built-up cave church of King Yemrehana Kirstos. This atmospheric church is even older than that of King Lalibela’s Rock-hewn churches.

Day 11 January 6/2012

Tour of King Lalibela’s 12th.C.Rockhewn churches (World Heritage Site). Although all of these churches are carved out of huge blocks of rocks, each of them displays unique architectural features from the other. In the evening you will attend Ethiopian Christmas (Genna) birth of Jesus Christ. This is a colorful festival celebrated by all Christian people in the country. The faithful service of priest with their great drums and sistras by standing around the edge or the cliff of Bete Marriam church is so impressive.

Day 12 January 7/2012

Drive to Kombolcha via many small towns of Wollo province including the historical town of Wuchale, where the controversial Treaty of Wuchale is signed between Emperor Menelik of Ethiopia and Italy which ultimately led to the famous battle of Adwa in 1896. En-route, depending on time availability, you visit Hayk Stephanos Monastery to kombolcha.

Day 13 January 8/2012

Drive back to Addis Ababa. In the evening, you will be invited traditional dinner in one of the best traditional restaurants of the capital with a cultural show of the different Ethiopian people. Transfer to the airport. Departure End of service.
